On November 17, 2022, Daniel Crespo Arteaga, rector of the UPC University, and the vice-mayor of Salvador de Bahía (Brazil), Ana Paula Matos, signed the agreement between the institutions. The main objectives of this agreement are: improving urban resilience, promoting social and sustainable development and addressing actions to confront the climate emergency.
The director of the UNESCO Chair of Sustainability, Professor Jordi Morató Farreras and Olga Lucía Sánchez Santander, researcher of the Chair and PhD candidate, met with the vice mayor and her team in order to replicate some projects that have been developed in Latin American cities, such as, for example, some of the projects coordinated by the UNESCO Chair in the city of Medellín, Colombia, which cover both the socio-economic part and the technological part, through the use of solutions based on nature (NbS) to promote urban resilience against climate change.
To achieve these objectives, the following strategic collaborative actions are planned to be carried out during 2023:
Basic Agreement for Technical, Scientific and Technological Cooperation
Exchange of experiences, technical knowledge and regulations.
Collaborate through teaching, research and scientific and technological development in socioeconomic sectors in order to transfer knowledge and innovation.
Promote alliances and strategic associations between institutions in order to undertake projects of common interest.
Within the agreement, the specific areas of cooperation between the UNESCO Chair of Sustainability – UPC and the city council of Salvador de Bahía were established:
Social Transformation, Climate Action, Sustainable Development and Resilience; Training and awareness of municipal employees about the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda
Support to public organizations to raise awareness about climate change in communities, through Community Civil Protection and Defense Centers (NUPDEC), which are “groups of neighbors duly prepared and committed to reducing risks in their community.”
Technical support for the creation of a circular economy guide
Cooperation between District Secretariats, Organizations and Institutions of both countries.
