The UNESCO Chair on Sustainability at the Higher School on Industrial, Aerospace and Audiovisual Engineering of Terrassa (ESEIAAT) at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC Campus Terrassa) has completed the renovation process by the UNESCO Paris for the 2018-2022 period.
The UNESCO Chair on Sustainability (UNESCO-SOST) established at the Polytechnical University of Catalonia in 1996, is an organization dedicated to promote an integrated system of research, training, information and documentation on water science, engineering and technologies resources for sustainability.
The Chair articulates and facilitates a multi-networking collaboration between different institutions in Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, focused on knowledge and best practices transfer in sustainable human development, from local scale to the global level.
The work carried out over the last 20 years has contributed to turn UNESCO-SOST into a model and a pole of innovation and excellence in matters related to the sustainable human development, especially in sustainable water resources management, in innovative technologies to meet social, environmental and economic needs, and in the design and articulation of transformation participative projects oriented to SDG.
Most efforts will be directed during next years to improve the knowledge generation and transfer related to circular economy, adaptation and mitigation to climate change and ecosystem services and their relation with intangible heritage, in a holistic approach to global change focused on four main areas of work: water, energy, land and biodiversity.
The Chair has carried out different activities that focus on a participatory community development approach oriented to SDG, integrating research, knowledge generation and transfer, capacity building and global cooperation to promote innovative technologies to meet social, environmental and economic needs.
The multi-network approach is the main tool for strengthening links between our academic partners (higher education institutions) and the other stakeholders, including international agencies (such as UNHabitat), NGOs, private companies and specially, local and regional public administrations, strengthening North-South, South-South and North-South-South cooperation.
The renovation of the Chair shows the quality of the work done. The UNESCO Chair on Sustainability of the UPC and its partners will have the opportunity to carry out this work during the next four years.
